Dear Sirs, I'm sure by now you've been inundated with emails complaining about the screening of the Jerry Springer Musical on the 8th. Whilst I hope I am not just adding to the multitude of reactions that you have received, I would ask you to seriously reconsider the showing of this programme. The main content of the musical that I object to is the portrayal of Jesus, Mary and God as sexually deviant. While I am in favour of serious exploration of sexuality and theology, the context of this musical cannot be counted as such. The scenes involved are written simply to shock and offend. I would object to such a portrayal of any leading religious figure if the attempt is simply to make a mockery. Let me cast this question in another way. Were this musical to portray Mohammed, Buddha or the first 10 sikh Gurus in this way, would you permit it to be screened? If your editorial policy would permit such a thing then by all means go ahead with the broadcast, but please provide me with details of how you are going to broadcast equally salacious fiction about other leading figures from other religions in order to provide "balance". If you would not permit such things then please explain why you permit it in the case of Christianity but not other faiths. Sincerely, Peter O Current Mood: annoyed
